AEROBICS
OZ STYLE
In 1982 an exercise program swept though Australia and continued for over two
decades; the excitement was over Aerobics Oz Style. Over 4,500 episodes were produced and all held the same
format: a warm-up, two main aerobic segments and a cool-down and stretch. Each episode lasted
30 minutes and they aired twice a day.
Aerobics Oz Style shows held a theme for each episode taped. The constant through
all the shows was high and low impact exercises including: legs, abdominals and toning. Later in the life of the
show, kickboxing, Latin dance and Pilates was introduced.
Along with the introduction of new styles of exercise were new styles of exercise
wear with the more conservative leotard over bicycle shorts in the beginning and halter tops and tight shorts
toward the end.
Instructors of both genders led Aerobics Oz Style and the show was intended for all
age ranges to offer something for everyone. While the show does not air new episodes today Aerobics Oz Style
remains ever popular amongst the home exercise enthusiast. The DVD’s available today include
more than a single episode held with additional footage and exercises.
Just as the exercises and the aerobic wear changed through the ages of Aerobics Oz
Style the locations also changed.
In the beginning each episode was shot in the studio, usually with a lead instructor
and four participating instructors. Later in the life of the show they taped in various outdoor locations, mostly
around Sydney Australia.
Many parodies have been made about Aerobics Oz Style including one from Australian
band TISM. This parody was in the form of a music video produced for the son ‘Whereareya’ in 1998.
The parody starts with the members following the instructor before a beer drinking
can throwing escapade begins and couches are jumped over.
Aerobics Oz Style is available today from their website where information on the
shows as well as on the instructors is available.
DVD’s can be purchased with a variety of styles to choose from. Whether looking to
improve the health via aerobic videos or looking for entertainment and or curiosity,

and the early 2000’s is sure to continue pleasing the masses for years to come.
